Sounds like a problem with your thumbnails folder. (Although I'm not certain what is specifically meant by proxy text. Are you seeing the filepath? Or maybe you are seeing the broken image Unicode glyph?) I had left 5.1.3 installed, and now the same thing happens on it. I uninstalled both, reinstalled 5.1.3 - still happens. I've tried adding jpgs that have never been near gramps. Same thing. This makes me think that it could be something in the wider environment, but I have now clue what.
