A non-Gramps solution would be to use TEI XML. This is a dialect of XML 
designed explicitly for historical as well as literary markup.

Normally TEI XML is used for creating electronic editions of old texts, 
but its customisable tagset means it could easily be used to carry a 
hierarchical descendancy structure as well as all the ancillary 
information you describe (dates and ranges, timelines, roles, positions, 
etc)

The TEI-L mailing list ([email protected]) is full of a lot of 
people with historical expertise who can probably get you started.
