I suspect that a large part of the diversity of expectations is
generational - amusingly appropriate for this particular list.

Those of us who were using mail lists 50 years ago have a set of
expectations which doesn't match that of those who grew up using the world
wide web. Taking myself as an example...

* I assume everyone on a list knows who I am - or at least my name and
email address. If I participate actively, they will get to know lots of
other things.
* I don't expect a lot of features, like topical breakdowns, which might be
found on a forum.
* I assume that I have to handle my own subscription using the more or less
standard email interface.
* I also know that different listservs have slightly different conventions
for management, which I expect to find in a footer.

I'd venture to guess that anyone using a mail list rather than some more
recent comm channel, like a forum or chat interface, is doing so through
personal preference.
