Self-invoked name

One ancestor in my extended family tree was given the birth forenames 
Patrick Redmond, in honour of the Irish nationalist politician John 
Edward Redmond (the family being political supporters).

Patrick was known by his family as Pats, but he disliked his second name 
so much that at an early age took the forename James in place of 
Redmond, and maintained for the rest of his life that he was Patrick 
James, although he never made any deposition or Deed Poll. (This did of 
course give his wife some trouble when he died, as his birth name didn't 
match all the other documents of the rest of his life.)

Gramps provides for a nickname, but that field is already taken by Pats 
because Gramps will not permit it as a value for the Call field, and the 
Also Known As entry type suffers from the same defect. What is a good 
way to encode a self-invoked forename that overrides a birth forename, 
but without any legal force?
