Like Craig indicated, give the person two names records under the Names tab
in the person's edit window.

Birth Name: Patrick Redmond

Also Known As: Patrict James with Pats as the nickname.

Based upon what you indicated, I would slot the AKA name into the Prefered
Name slot.
