Hi, check VisAD out: http://www.ssec.wisc.edu/~billh/visad.html and a derivative: http://www.unidata.ucar.edu/software/idv/ you might need to write a wrapper or two, but you then get contours, meshes etc, and some viz, too. There's also a Jython interface to simplify the work.
