Yes, you are right about that, but in order to open ECW files, the
users just need to install the appropriate ECW plugins on their GIS
software form Earth Resource Mapping web page
( http://www.ermapper.com/downloads/plugins.aspx ). Those plugins are
free. Besides, the providers also offer a free ECW compressor which
only has limitation on the original file size. Otherwise in terms of
image quality and performance, ECW is obviously the best format for me.
I have seriously tested MrSID, JPEG2000 and ECW formats while working
on the European mosaic. Trust me - ECW is the only format which allows
you to open 400 compressed images in GIS software at once... And,
honestly, I didn't find any GIS image compression software that would
be a total freeware.
