Hi Peter for your WMS Question i recommend TileCache (http://labs.metacarta.com/wms-c/) on top of your WMS and using mapbuilder (http://docs.codehaus.org/display/MAP/Home) (which support/include Openlayer (http://openlayers.org/)) for performant WMS caching.
