Personally, I'd not think too much about supporting too
many "optionals":
- renderer: libgd or cairo or agg or ...
- provider: GDAL or FDO or Yet Another Cool Interface to Geospatial ...

I believe that in most cases it would be sufficient to provide complete 
support to GDAL/OGR. Big variety of options may be distracting
too much :-)
