NetCDF error

I have an xyz file which I am trying to turn into a grd file, but I get the following error: >gmt xyz2grdbase_elev.xyz -G/JUNK/base_elev.grd -I0.005 -R-120/-114/32/35 xyz2grd (GMTAPI_Export_Grid): NetCDF: Can't add HDF5 file metadata [/JUNK/base_elev.grd] [Session gmt (0)]: Error returned from GMT API: GMT_GRID_WRITE_ERROR (19) gmt info on the xyz file gives: base_elev.xyz: N = 867679 <-120/-114> <31.42/35.065> <-15571.09/2746.35> I'm not sure what's wrong and how to interpret the error message.
