Thank you, I wasn't aware of this. 

After studying man psimage, I'm under the impression that GDAL only reads rasterized files. I strive for a completely vectorized plot (*) as it'll be printed in sizes varying from DIN A4 (~8.3x11.7in) up to DIN A2 (~16.5x23.4in).

(*) completely vectorized plot: I'm already cheating on this one as the terrain elevation plotted with grdimage is also rasterized. I'm masking the jagged borders by laying a poly line with an adequate width over the edge.
