newbie question about mapproject

I have some code written by someone else that uses 4.something.  I have
5.1.1 on my machine.

One of the commands that was in the original was 

mapproject -R-124/-116.5/31.25/38 -JQ-120.25/14.4 -bis3 -bos3 -S  -V

(as part of a pipe stream)

I've changed that to

mapproject -R-71/-65/41/45 -JQ-68/43.5 -bi3f -bo3f -S  -V < ptemp >
mtemp

and taken the pipe out of the picture by having the previous command
output to ptemp.

The problem is that command will run for hours, so clearly I need to do
something else, but I'm not sure what.

Any hints most graciously accepted...
