We used to use mapserver occasionally as a WMS server together with mapproxy. Once we used it also to generate static cartographic map for printing, which I think is not typical case for MapServer :-) In the same time we were using Geoserver for serving vector features to our CleverAnalytics platform (WFS). But new version of our platform is using MapBox vector tiles and just few old projects are still running with Geoserver. Our colleagues from CleverFarm are still using Geoserver as a WMS/WFS server. But I don't know more details about their use cases. Personally, I prefer Mapserver. I like it's configuration using mapfile. But have to say, I haven't used either of them for a long time and I have really little experience with Geoserver. Probably it's GUI can be the reason why some people prefer to work with it?
