ShapeFileII.pas compiler errors?

I'm trying to get the ShapeFileII.pas utility to work but it never likes to 
compile (D5). Adding " external 'shapelib.dll'; " to every proc/func 
declaration solved some causes, but then it complains about the DBFHandle 
not found.
Even copying the whole thing line by line into a new form unit gives the 
same results.
It seems obvious I'm not calling this dll correctly.
Could anybody give me a short project sample code on how I should be able 
to open a shape file? Hopefully I can take it from there.
