So give this a try: http://members.dslextreme.com/users/billw/test/gkrellmss.tar.gz Untar it, and in the gkrellmss directory: $ make $ gkrellm -p src/gkrellmss.so -debug46 > somefile If the ALSA capture device can't be opened, then there might not be anything in "somefile", but there should be a popup telling the reason. If ALSA is opened, then the log file will fill fast so you don't need to run for very long.
