Internet - http connections

I have an Internet monitor set up that tracks http connections on port
80. This monitor typically shows 2-6 connections per minute on the bar
chart. But the displayed "http" number is currently 707; why? This is
on a new server I just set up, and AFAIK it is just like the other
servers I've set up. The other servers I have being monitored by
gKrellm seems to display this number as the number of *current* connections.

The smtp counter on another internet monitor for this server seems to be
acting the same way; it is at 130 and we don't even accept mail on that
server.

My format string is "\t$a\f $l\N$A\f $L" so this should be tracking
current active connections, but the numbers don't seem reasonable.

What's going on?

Rob
