Loading images with alpha channel.

Howdy gkrellm list,

Well, it's been a *long* time since I last played with writing a
plugin, and I've got some questions.

The current gkrellmoon uses xpm images that are just plain ugly. I'd
like to have nicely generated moon images with a nice smooth
anti-aliased edge.

What I'd like to do, but I don't know how, or even if it's possible,
is keep the moon images in a format with an alpha channel (png). When
loading the image, alpha blend that in with whatever the current meter
background is, and create decals from that.

Does that make any sense? Is there a better approach?

Thanks!
    -Dale
