Switching non-existing theme breaks Gkrellm display

Ubuntu 8.04.1, Blackbox, Gkrellm 2.3.1, launched using "gkrellm -w".
If I go to Configuration, Themes, there is one Theme in the list
("Default"). I didn't install any additional theme.
On the bottom of the window it says "5 total theme alternatives". If
I change the number in any way, the Gkrellm window is replaced by a
grey rectangle of the same size. Gkrellm also does not grab mouse
events on this rectangle.
The only way to get Gkrellm working again is to kill it from the
command line. When I open it again, the background of the eth0, Disk,
Proc and CPU krells have suddenly become transparent.
This doesn't render Gkrellm unusable, but IMO it looks broken.
