Force start without connection to remote server

Hi all,

This is my first post on this list, if my question is a frequently asked
one, I apologize. Anyway, i couldn't find anything in the archives nor
in the documentation.

I would like to force gkrellm to start, even if the remote server it
connects to is not reachable. The reason for this is that I would like
to use gkrellm to monitor virtual machines on my PC.

This works fine if the virtual machine is started first. If it is shut
down, the red pulsing alarm behind the hostname in gkrellm indicates
that the machine is down. I like to have this for a non reachable (non
running) machine at startup as well, instead of the message on stdout
that the server is not reachable.

A bonus would be if a click on the uptime triggers a command on the
local machine, if the server is down, and a command on the remote
(virtual) machine, if it is running (currently used to trigger a
shutdown of the virtual machine).

Any ideas, how this can be achieved?
