It tries lm_sensors first because that is more likely to have correct scaling factors for newer sensor chips. If it is a newer chip gkrellm doesn't know about, gkrellm still tries to read the data but scales data by some default values which may just be accidentally right for your chip. Or it can also get temperatures from the ACPI interface.
