I've just been reviving an old Thinkpad T61, and that behaves normally in 
KDE-plasma. The Thinkpad uses an Intel Mobile GM965/GL960 VGA chip, and the 
workstation I was reporting on uses an AMD/ATI Radeon R9 380X.
