No, its an AMD/ATI Tonga XT Radeon R9 380X [1]. It's only been on the market 
less than a year, I think, so the drivers aren't yet quite enterprise class 
- or in this case, the interface between the kernel code and the microcode 
isn't, as it seems to me.

I have to set VIDEO_CARDS="amdgpu radeonsi" in /etc/portage/make.conf and 
then I have to include 13 modules amdgpu/tonga_*.bin from sys-kernel/linux-
firmware in the kernel. That doesn't look like a long-term solution to me.
