Cool, Peter.

The themeability of GKrellM is very nice (esp. since it's
performance-neutral), but I agree it's a problem that the documentation
(http://gkrellm.srcbox.net/Themes.html) is so sparse. While I'm a
programmer myself, I didn't want to bother reading source-code for this
mini-project (theming GKrellM to match my desktop preferences), so I had
to experiment too (just like you're doing, it seems).

The various yellow things ("krells," often flickering) are defined as
raster bit images, in files named krell_*.png, under
.../.gkrellm2/themes/Heliotrope/. GIMP is the tool of choice for editing
these. In particular, if you change their yellow color to "transparent,"
it should do what you want. But if it's only the frenetic flickering
that's bothering you, you can change that in the regular GUI settings
(Configuration ➜ General ➜ Options ➜ Krell and LED updates per second);
I use 3-per-second. For other super-fine-tuning, look into the gkrellmrc
file.
