My take on this is pretty simple. One of the many major benefits of
Gnucash is the transparency of the code to everyone who builds and uses
it. I could, if I were so motivated, peruse all the code and see if
there's anything to worry about, why a calculation is not resulting in
the numbers I expect, etc. More importantly, I know that there are a lot
of people out there with much more skill and experience than me who are
studying the code and protecting us from incorrect or malicious code.

With proprietary applications, there's no watchdog. I'm expected to
trust some random person with my data? Not just financial information,
but really once you start up a program it can access anything a clever
programmer wishes to. I just don't see it being worth the risk.
