And this from the Gnucash documentation that John linked to in that email:


              Perl runtime location

    The gnc-fq-update script always runs the macOS system Perl runtime
    (/usr/bin/perl), and disregards the Perl installed by package
    managers. Doing so ensures GnuCash, when launched from Finder, can
    locate Finance::Quote correctly.

It would probably be possible to hack the #! in gnc-fq-update to point 
to an alternative perl, but I don't know whether there would be any 
unexpected repercussions.
