Maybe accounting for a project/event. You might anticipate the 
project/event will be bringing in money for the organization BUT there 
are expenses associated with it. You'd like to see that all together. Do 
note however:

1) You can use "contra"  accounts to do this.

2) Even if you do place income and expense accounts traditionally you 
can produce a report showing just the income and expenses and net for 
this project/event by running a P&L with just the accounts related to 
the project/event selected.
