I don't think anyone is disputing the purpose of those reports in 
standard financial accounting and why they are constructed in a 
particular fashion.

The use case here appears to be something in the realm of Managerial 
Accounting where you look at similarly styled reports using a subset of 
transactions for the purposes of evaluating performance of a particular 
'job' or 'department/subsidiary/cost-revenue enter'.

The OPs specific case is wanting to see if for each club meeting, their 
expenses are staying within their dues collected for it. There are of 
course other ways to determine this than a P&L/Income Statement.

The filterable P&L is likely the one most needed for a small business. 
There have been many a thread on this list discussing these use cases.

A subset-style Balance Sheet would really only be usable for a more 
complicated larger business entity that should more than likely be using 
other software. (and/or dividing the sub-entities into their own books)
