That is to say, this is important.  I have about
a dozen projects that would benefit from this.

I request that any solutions, even partial solutions,
be posted here.

Patches that are not expertly written and/or that
don't apply to the current version might have
value nevertheless, insofar as they point to
issues that need to be addressed.
