Could you explain, why you want to do this? the underlying reason?
That would really help trying to find a solution. 
Perhaps there is another solution to this underlying problem.
I mean, another solution than you propose solving it now, with the
slide-show remembering image-position.

For instance, couldn't you just edit the four pictures in the gimp, save
the part of the picture you want to show into new images: 1, 2, 3 and 4,
and slide-show those four new pictures?

Creating and adding new options and features sometimes can lead to bloat
an application.
Like you said, gqview is very nice now, not least because of its small
size and ease of use. Thus, adding a feature to 'solve' a problem that
can perhaps be solved in another way, is not good.
