This is possible when using %V/%v, but when no window is displayed system()
is called and that too should be stoppable in the event a command hangs -
eventuallty I will remove the use of system() all together as it is not
controllable.

I am considering adding a small indicator to the window/screen when an edit
command is running so that if it hangs or takes too long the user can still
abort it.

It already does this, and is the only thing the stop button can currently do.

Greetings,
John
