i prefer it too. But i had some more problems that your "new" system was
not fixing, i prefer to rename the photos to "date" way
(year-month-day-hour:min:sec...)

Maybe you are interested to check. It allows too to just create symbolic
links, add a suffix to photo names, add an offset (some people don't
set up the time of camera), etc.

It is possible to use in graphic way (qt) or command line
