I see, this makes sense and now that I know, I can live with this.
But it's easy to be confused; The option 'enable delete key' apparently
only affect the behaviour in the main window: If enabled, pressing
[Delete] deletes the image, if disabled, pressing [Delete] does nothing.

Pressing [Delete] in a collection window always deletes it from the
list.

In using 'Find duplicates', I (and perhaps the general user) usually
want to find duplicates with the purpose of deleting the duplicate
files.
In pressing [Delete] and seeing the duplicetes removed from the list I
actually thought the duplicate was removed.

Ehm, lemme think...

Would it be an option to let the behaviour of [Delete] be the same for
the main window and for collection: e.g [Ctrl-D] Deletes the file
[Delete] deletes the file if the option 'enable delete key' is set.

[Ctrl-X] (or perhaps [X]) remove the selected images from the
collection
(Think eXpunge ala emacs or, Ctrl-X for Cut ala windows)

If that makes sense, it would be prudent not to change the behaviour in
the 1.4.x series, but introduce it in 1.6.0 when it's out.

If it doesn't make sense, then perhaps the option 'enable delete key'
can be more explicit e.g. 'enable delete key in image/file manager'

Another idea is to use the status bar:
When there are 10 duplicates found and I deleted 5 from the list:

Instead of saying: 5 matches found in 75 files
it could say: 10 matches found in 75 files, showing 5 matches in list
