NEF

Hi,

NEF stands for Nikon Electronic Image Format. It is
Nikon's RAW format in 
recent DSLRs. Last year raw support in Linux was
almost inexistant. Nowadays, 
there exists several (GIMP) plugins that can read raw
files and decode them. 
Shooting in raw is now something doable for a Linux
user.

As it stand, gqview is of little use with .nef files.
A .nef file is a TIFF 
file that contains an exif header, a small thumbnail
(160x120), a large jpg 
copy of the image (3008x2000 in the case of the D70),
and of course, the raw 
data of the sensor. gqview already recognize the exif
and the thumbnail but 
doesn't know how to get the jpeg image in the nef.

There exists howevere a nice solution on the web to
make .nef work in gqview.

There is a patch for gqview 1.5.x that uses a small
external C code 
(nefextract) which can read a .nef file and dumbs the
large jpeg to stdin. It 
works really well.

Now my question is: do you think it would be possible
to add the patch to 
gqview main developpement tree? (So that I don't have
to hack every new 
version of gqview on my own :-)
