The man page is outdated, but the Documentation (help menu) is always up to
date.

It is poorly implemented, but does exist as a remote command option:

  gqview -r -sr/path/to/images

where /path/to/images is folder to recurse (note no space between -sr and path)

  gqview -rh will list possible remote commands.
