Anti-Alias Goodness

I often take large photos and want to reduce the sizes for attaching to 
email. When I resize them in gqview and after the image has been painted 
to the window, a terrific anti-aliasing is applied. Now I understand 
that since gqview is an image viewer, not an image editor, I need to do 
my resizing with another tool.

I have looked for an anti-alias option in a few other editors (xv, image 
magick, gimp) and haven't found it although I confess I didn't look at 
every possible option.

How can I get the great anti-alias effect of gqview in a true image 
editor? And (morbid curiosity) is it possible to turn off the anti-alias 
effect in gqview?
