thumbnail creation speed (and request)

Hi-

I've been a big fan of gqview for several years.   Recently I have been 
playing with a slightly different configuration of the windows from the 
default.

I am loading the thumbnails in the large window panel and I'm 'viewing 
as icons'.  Well, when it goes to display the thumbnails, it's really 
slow.  I've got the thumbnail creation settings maxed out for speed.

Thumbnail creation isn't bad for small files, but when you load up a 
directory of images from say a Canon 1DmkII it's not the best.   

If my thumbnail size is 160x120, would it make sense for the app to just 
extract the embedded thumbnail from the image?  I know that's what The 
GIMP does in the file open dialog.

I just ran a quick test and on 278 high ISO JPEG images from a Canon 
1DmkII (1.2 gigs).   'jhead' took less than 1 second while gqview's 
internal thumbnail routine took over 3 minutes.  Slower than even 
ImageMagick which took 2 minutes 2 seconds to generate the same 
thumbnails.   A similar test on smaller sized files (less than 1 sec 
for jhead, 40 seconds for gqview, and 27.5 seconds for IM)

Ok, so I just read about this 'thumbnail standard' thing that GQview 
uses.  I guess my theory of extracting the embedded thumbnail and using 
that if it's available is probably blown out the door.

BTW, this is GQview 2.1.5 (1.guru.suse102), from the Guru repository 
running on Suse 10.2
