well, whaddya know, I just looked at 1.3.7 on my laptop (gotta love debian
for keeping you up to date even when you don't know it); and right there
under the Edit menu, is just the functionality you're looking for. (there's
a couple of lines which invoke jpegtran to rotate and save the image).
Also, on the 'Editors' tab of the Options dialog, there's places to put in
your own commands. (this is where the lines invoking jpegtran are).

So it looks like the estimable Mr. Ellis was way ahead of us all; and is
probably sitting back laughing and wondering when we'll actually take a look
at the program and see that the functionality is already there. :)

guess I haven't upgraded gqview on my workstation for a while; and I
certainly haven't gone looking for any new functionality.

As for your questions, Hrotko:
- rotating and flipping the image are part of normal things you'd do in the
course of displaying it. my objection was to including code to *save*
  images.
- as for slideshows and scripting; I wouldn't have an issue with making the
slideshow an external script that passes commands to the running copy of
gqview. lots of flexibility via that method. Our esteemed developer
probably decided it was easier to build the functionality in tho. :)

it's been an interesting debate, tho I feel a bit silly now. :)
