Problems with gqview 1.3.8 - 1.4.0 and large numbers of files

When I browse a directory with a large number of files the selected  
file doesn't load. When entering the directory the first image is  
displayed but when selecting a different file from the list CPU usage  
reaches 100% and nothing happens. The selected image will not be  
displayed even after waiting more than half an hour but CPU usage  
remains 100% all the time. Starting gqview with the --debug option  
shows no error. Only gqview versions >=1.3.8 show that problem.

My system:
AMD Duron, 756MB RAM
Linux Mandrake 9.1
gtk 2.2.1
