It's possible that this could be done through libferris; which would provide
a generalized abstraction layer, allowing the mouting of more than just
tarballs and the like.

it claims to be able to mount http, ftp, ssh, dbm, as well as tar files.

I'm not a programmer tho; so I don't know the practicalities involved.
