Do you have a Syntax file in your mc config directory? You can find the
relevant path using "mc -F", it will most likely be "~/.config/mc/". If
such file exists, does it contain something like the below?

    file ..\*\\.cir$ Spice\scircuit
    include spice.syntax

Spice and Markdown are relatively recent additions, so I suspect an
outdated custom Syntax file.

Which version of mc do you run as root: the one you have compiled or the
one from Debian packages?
