Hi Ben,

I don't have access to a MacOS but since it seems so tricky, let me tell you some wild ideas.

First of all, you should try do understand the assertion error message. If it lists too fast and you can't stop the shell or redirect the output, try video recording the screen with your smartphone. So far, we cannot be sure what macro key you actually set and what exactly it is doing.

Then, i assume that anything you were doing to search for files or env is doing as the sudo admin user.

And sionce you've already looked into it, that there isn't any XDG_CONFIG_DIR in the admin env.

* What then does echo $HOME or 'cd ~; pwd' tell as home directory ?

* I would then try the 'find' command, if that is available, because ls can be wicked.

* I wonder if you used some special installer for your mc package, like brew, and if that creates it's own environment shell ?

* Or the MacOS sudo enviroment is special --> man sudoers and search for env_ definitions.

* Or MacOS even creates a ramdisk for sudo user ? 'man sudo' could give hints. If that's happening then a reboot could help.

* It appears your macro blocks a straight return but not Ctrl-R ? Can you still use Ctrl-C, Ctrl-R to define macros ?

At least you could try define a replacement key for Carriage Return (like Shift-Return) to be able to work on files again, until this riddle is solved.

And if that works, maybe in another try replace Return just by the 'Return' key. Huh. What a deal.

* If that's not possible, then can you just create your own mc.macros file in the standard place ? Redefining Return to just the same key.
