Obviously they either store their settings in different places; or sudo mc doesn't store anything and the failures are of a different nature than we assume.

Apsopos asssume. I'm going to assume that you mistakenly wrote 'su' here many times, when you really meant 'sudo' - is that ok ?

If that's enough of a solution for you, then i'm also not going to debug any further. Some day you may randomly find out what was going on, then pls update this thread since it still could help others who were running into similar trouble.
