Question about "Waiting to retry... %d (Control-G to cancel)"

Dear Midnight Commander list, I have a question regarding this message: "Waiting to retry... %d (Control-G to cancel)". I got it today, it was waiting for 30 seconds, then 29, ..., and I interrupted it. I was connecting by FTP to my server, and maybe pressed Enter more times than needed, not sure. I have searched the file in this matter, it is mc-4.8.29/src/vfs/ftpfs/ftpfs.c, line 997. I don't understand what might have happened and what are the conditions in which this message would appear. I am a C++ programmer, but not accustomed to the Midnight Commander code.
