You don't mention your hardware, Debian on ARM only does 64 bit which
is a lot slower than 32 bit.  Some chips like the one in a Raspberry
Pi 3B can run in 32 or 64 bit mode.  Raspbian runs 32 bit mode, Debian
only 64 bit (by default).
