 Great,  Combined with the mimeapps.list entry that worked!

ThanksBobC

  P.S. Should have done this before I sent the earlier email. I confirm that my version of MC did NOT successfully open .webp files. I edited the Extension File and added (by copying and modifying an existing section) thus:

 ### Images ###

 [webp]
 Shell=.webp
 Open=/usr/lib/mc/ext.d/image.sh open webp

 After saving and closing the file, MC successfully opens a .webp file when before the edit it did not.

 Regards.

From the MC Command menu, select Edit Extensions File (F9 > Command > Edit Extensions File). This file tells MC how to open files based on the file's .XXXX extension. It should be fairly self-explanatory (there is information at the top of the file with more information). One can specify in this file a particular application to use with a particular file extension, or one can tell MC (towards the bottom of the file) to use a helper script /usr/lib/mc/ext.d/image.sh (this helper script has sections for opening an image, or viewing an image).

 Interestingly, I see in the extensions file WEBM is specified for my version of MC, but WEBP is not.

 Regards.

  I'm not sure why mc is able to open the jpg, gif, or movie files, but I like that feature and wish I could get the webp pictures and animation files to open with Mirage also.
  I installed: sudo apt install webp-pixbuf-loader webp
  and this made it so Mirage can open them automatically if I press enter on any of the images in SpaceFM or zzzfm file managers, but not with mc.
  Any ideas how to get them to open like jpg files do?

  BTW, Thanks very much to the Developers of this GREAT program.  I use it every day.
  PS: I am running antiX 22
