The point of "quickly" is that you do that before `sleep 1` terminates,
so it works the way I described for any program which does not finish
executing before me hitting <Ctrl-O>

I'm using tmux, but again, works the same outside it for me.

So is the behavior 1-3 normal, or are the current integrations supposed
to work better?
