why does mc prepend "/" in front of all directory names ?

Hello, why does midnight commander show "/" in front of directory name? https://paste.pics/475c8018bea2862a82585b4c3e521154 perhaps to visually differentiate files from directories? technically, and pedantically, I think it makes no sense, and is confusing. On UNIX, path starting with / start at the root of the filesystem.
