If the result is lots of tasks you don't need to show your
managers/developers you can fold the summary tasks. That way you will
only show the long summary task.

Another thing that might be nice is to be able to assign "Joe" to the
summary task which would mean that he is assigned to all sub tasks.

Having events doesn't make it less information, you would still have to
enter information about the events, type:
"API design finished" -- Event
instead of 
"Design API" -- Sub task

So you don't gain anything by having events rather than sub tasks.
Unless I totally misunderstood you.
