This is probably a real bug, that is not exposed on linux, it would be
great to get it fixed maybe with some help from our FreeBSD friends :)

From here on, it's the linking problem I suspect.

As the error messages from autogen.sh (should) state, automake-1.4-p6 is
now required to build from CVS, could it be that you have a too old
automake?
