I'm not sure I understand what you mean.
A cache would be a local file, which can act as a 'recovery repository'
should the application crash or anything, and which can act as a decoupling
between the application(s) and the 'proper' storage, e.g. database.

I think there are some advantages to such an approach, the separation
between the application and the 'centralized' store being the most powerful
one IHMO.
